Flute 2/3: What will I learn?

The course is for intermediate and advanced players and will cover technique, repertoire, style, a bit of theory

and, where appropriate, a bit of history. The course will focus mainly on Scottish music with occasional

detours into tune writing, improvisation, harmonies, other types of flute music and playing, and maybe a little

about flute maintenance. The course is for players of traditional wooden flute, with or without keys. Players of

Boehm system flutes are also welcome. It will be taught by ear with written material in support.

Malcom Reavell

Malcolm has been playing flute for more years than he can remember, and he should probably play the flute better than he does, but apparently, he’s not bad. Malcolm is 90% self-taught but has tried to steal as much as he can from some of the best players in the traditional music world and beyond. Malcolm has never made a recording, so you’ll not find him on YouTube apart from an odd clip from a flute fling event in 2018 where his flute was a bit sharp. Almost everything else you’ll find on the internet from Malcolm is about economics, on which subject he can bore you to death. Malcolm has played in various bands over the years, most notably the Aberdeen band “Hallyracket” where also played sax. Malcolm likes to improvise and sometimes writes tunes. His most famous composition is “The Road to Banff”, which took all of 5 minutes to write. It is a grade 3 violin piece. Other tunes are available. His favourite biscuits are Marks and Spencer lemon and lime Jaffa cakes, but he will still eat McVities chocolate digestives if forced to.
