Fiddle 0: What will I learn?

The Fiddle 0 class is aimed at complete beginners who have never held a fiddle before.  If you’ve never read a note of music either, then this class is for you as we’ll primarily be learning by ear.  The basic instrument and bow hold will be covered, and you will develop a sense of musicality as you learn to play in a group.  If you’ve done a small amount of violin then this class will be useful for consolidating any technique that you may have learned before too.  The most important aim of the Fiddle 0 class is to have fun in a supportive environment - and hopefully be the end of the ten weeks, you’ll have a tune or two under your fingers!

Joe Hibbs

Joe Hibbs is a fiddler from the north-east of Scotland, originally from Johnshaven but now teaching, playing and living in Aberdeen. Although being classically trained at the University of Aberdeen, Joe has always had a passion for Scottish traditional music and now teaches violin, viola and Scot’s fiddle in schools in the Ellon and Portlethen areas. While studying on the BMus (Hons) course, Joe researched the historical, social, geographical and technical variations within the Scot’s fiddle genre. In early 2012, while studying at Aberdeen College (now NESCOL), Joe formed the locally acclaimed Reel of Fortune Ceilidh Band who have since played at over 400 events, ranging from weddings to high end corporate functions. Reel of Fortune continue to play with an eclectic and contemporary style and take influence from modern day traditional bands such as Talisk, Ímar and Mànran to name a few.
